There’s a desperate need for more transitional housing in northwestern Ontario for women who want to leave abusive relationships.
That’s the feeling from a Red Lake woman’s shelter that continues to lobby for funding to develop its own housing.
New Starts says it has the property and planning approvals to begin construction.
Executive Director Jennifer Chamberlain says they’re still waiting for the provincial or federal levels of government to approve funding for the project.
“It’s very hard to get capital dollars,” Chamberlain explains, adding the shelter has been trying to get the housing off the ground for more than 20 years.
Chamberlain says the only communities in the region that have transitional housing are Dryden and Atikokan, and believes there is a desperate need for more. (File Photo)
