A local runner brought home the gold for Thunder Bay.
Trevor Zimak was the first to cross the finish line at the Ten Mile Road Race, with Duluth’s Scott Bailey coming second a few minutes later, and Carole Cameron being the first female runner to cross.
Zimak says the best inspiration is to compete against yourself and strive to be better each time, while Cameron achieved that goal by running her personal best.
Also running in a relay style were ten of Thunder Bay’s firefighters, each running a mile in full gear and respirators.
Firefighter Steph Drost was the runner in the final mile, and notes how awkward and heavy all of the equipment was while running.
“[With the respirator] you really need to focus on breathing, whereas if you’re just running normally you don’t really think about it.”
They were honouring the memory of their comrade Kevin Kennedy, who never missed a Race before his passing in 2011.
