A peaceful ending for a standoff on the city’s north side early this morning.
Its roots were in a missing person’s report the police received from concerned family members about a 72 year old man.
Police were alerted that he might be in the Government Road area after his vehicle was spotted early this morning at around 2 am.
Believing he may have been armed, police sealed off the area for about 3 and a half hours.
They say they kept negotiating with the man via cell phone until he surrendered without incident at around 5:30.
The man has been taken to the hospital for observation.

Government Road Incident Peacefully Resolved
The Thunder Bay Police Service received a missing person report yesterday morning from concerned family members of a 72 year old Thunder Bay male. Police began the initial investigation and received further information just before 2:00 a.m. that escalated the search effort out of concern for his welfare as it was believed he may have a firearm.
Patrol officers located the male in a vehicle belonging to him in the Government Road area and immediately contained the area. The command post, negotiators and Emergency Task Unit officers arrived on scene a short time later. Communication was made via cell phone with this male who agreed to exit his vehicle. He was apprehended without incident just before 5:30 a.m. The 72 year old male was escorted to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre for observation.
The area is now safe and open to the public. The investigation is ongoing.
