You can now report drivers who idle for longer than two minutes.
City Council reduced the time you’re allowed to let your car sit with the engine on down from five minutes last night.
There was plenty of support from Councillors, although the difficulty of enforcing the by-law was brought up several times.
City spokesperson James Coady explains they’ll be relying on people to take notes about drivers they see going against the by-law and submit complaints, similarily to the city’s noise by-law.
Even if people who let their car idle don’t get a ticket, he’s hopeful they can change people’s habits.
“A lot of people aren’t even aware than an idling restriction exists,” Coady points out, “The fact that we change our by-law and draw some attention to it hopefully will make some people realize that you don’t need to [idle], and it will really help with the environment.”
You can still let your car warm up in the winter and run the air conditioning when it’s hotter than 27 degrees. (File Photo)
