Local Deaf and hard of hearing residents can get more services at the Canadian Hearing Society’s new office.
Vice President Shane Silver tells us their newly-opened Hewitson Street location features two meeting rooms and classrooms.
Those allow students attending sign language courses to connect with other learners in CHS offices across the country.
The office also has technology to allow a sign language interpreter in Thunder Bay to translate for a client in other cities.
“If someone in Sault Ste Marie needs an interpreter but there’s not one available there, we can provide one virtually through iPads and smartphones.”
Hearing Society officials spent around six months searching for a new location, saying they weren’t satisfied with their Victoriaville offices.
“We wanted to make sure that we were providing a place where they could come, feel fantastic, get the services they require,” Silver explains, adding the Victoriaville office wasn’t accessible for clients who use wheelchairs or have other disabilities. (Staff Photo/Video)
