It might not look like it now, but the fire season in northwestern Ontario is officially underway.
April 1st marks the traditional start to the fire season.
MNR spokesperson Jonathan Scott says things have been pretty quiet so far.
“That’s usually dependant on the weather patterns as they come in and develop,” Scott points out, adding much of the region is still covered with snow. “But, going forward. that could change very quickly, and we want the public to be very cognizant of what the conditions are outside.”
Scott says the MNR is still busy getting ready for the season and has started hiring their crew personnel.
He adds that while the chance of fire is very low, local residents need to know they can’t do any outdoor burning whenever they want.
You’re not allowed to start any fires earlier than two hours before sundown, and they must be extinguished no later than two hours past sunrise.
Even during those hours, he reminds you that all fires must be monitored at all times. (File Photo)
