It was an emotional time for Thunder Bay’s Carol Klukie as she attended a re-dedication of a cenotaph commemorating those Canadian soldiers who died in Afghanistan.
Her son, Private Josh Klukie, was killed there in 2006.
Carol Klukie admits the weekend ceremony in Ottawa brought back much of the sadness for the families as they saw the pictures of their loved ones etched in stone.
She says “it’s hard to describe, the feeling is overwhelming when I walk in to see all those beautiful faces.”
Klukie says she saw the memorial when she was in Afganistan and government officials tried to “replicate it as much as possible,” and says “the feel of it brought it right back home” to her.
The soldier’s memorial also includes the names of Thunder Bay’s Corporal Anthony Boneca, and Private Robert Costall who were also killed in Afghanistan in 2006.
