The RCMP detachment in Thunder Bay is warning residents about their phone number being spoofed.
Their phone number, 807-623-2791, is being used to intimidate and defraud people.
Spoofing is when a scammer uses a device to mask their real phone number and display a different number that does not belong to the caller.
Unlike other provinces, the RCMP is not the primary law enforcement agency in Ontario.
Locally, the RCMP enforces federal laws, including national security, border integrity, cybercrime, and more.
The federal police is reminding residents that government agencies including police will never ask for personal information, or show up at your home to collect money for a child in jail.
