A fire at a local grain elevator was handled by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.
An automatic alarm was triggered at the elevator just after 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
When firefighters arrived they were directed to the bin floor where they found smoke and high temperatures coming from machinery on the upper level.
“The situation posed significant challenges, as crews worked to manage both the malfunctioning equipment and the risk of a dust explosion—a serious concern in grain facilities,” explained Fire Rescue in a release. “Additionally, the extremely hot and humid weather added to the difficulties faced by our firefighters.”
It took several hours, but the situation was successfully brought under control.
