Free fishing is here once again this long weekend.
It is one of four times of the year where the Ontario government lifts the requirement of a licence to Canadian residents who wish to fish in provincial waters.
Officials say these opportunities serve as a reminder of the value of the recreational fishery and the importance of keeping it healthy.
Those who plan to go out must follow conservation licence catch limits, obey size limits and sanctuaries, and follow fishing regulations.
As well you must carry a form of provincial or federal identification which includes your name and date of birth.
Additionally, should you need items to fish there are free equipment loans available in locations across the province.
Most loaner sites are at offices for provincial parks in the region , but residents can also loan out equipment from the Fort Frances Public Library, the Red Lake Public Library, and at the Kenora Public Library at both the main and Keewatin branches.
Other free fishing opportunities in Ontario take place on the Mother’s Day Weekend (May 11-12), Father’s Day Weekend (June 15-16), and during the Family Fishing Week (June 29-July 7).
