The leader of the Ontario New Democrats says all aspects of highway safety from training for truck drivers to snow clearing schedules needs to improve.
Speaking in Thunder Bay Tuesday Marit Stiles called the Ford government oblivious to the issues on highways in Northern Ontario.
“They can’t pretend they don’t know. The truth is they’ve just been just completely out of touch with the realities of people in Northern Ontario and they refuse to acknowledge them, and Doug Ford and his government continue to ignore the very urgent need for safety improvements on northern highways.”
Stiles points to a number of initiatives proposed by members of her party which she says are non partisan and the government should support them as it is, as she says, a matter of life or death.
Additionally, she says improvements need to be made to increase the active operating hours for truck inspection stations in Ontario for commercial vehicles, as well as the need for those commercial vehicles to stick to dedicated truck routes.
