It’s a day to recognize the work that women, and people who identify as women, do.
Erin Sisko, the founder of Elleiance Network, spoke to Acadia News about the day. She said it’s important year-round, but the day puts it top of mind that women have experienced unique challenges over the course of history and still have a bit of an upward battle when it comes to achieving equality.
Sisko spoke of the gender pay gap, which should be closed in 2059. Sisko went on to say that there are still things that are challenging for women to build businesses and wealth. She noted that the day brings awareness and amplifies the voices of women and puts them on a platform that gets them recognized, and the connections and resources to take their businesses to the next level.
The Elleiance Network founder notes that women’s businesses aren’t growing at the same rate as men’s businesses, even though the growth rate is outpacing the opposite gender. In North America, only 2 per cent of women’s businesses are hitting the million dollar revenue milestone.
Her parting piece of advice was to find a community of women that are doing the same thing as you and understand what you’re going through. “when you do that you don’t feel as alone, and the answers you’re looking for come with a lot more ease”
