The Canada Games Complex is planning to close in June for maintenance pending City Council approval.
City Administration will be providing councilors a report at the March 6th meeting recommending that significant maintenance and construction be completed at the Canada Games Complex.
If approved, the facility would close for four months starting June 4 with the work costing $3M. 80 per cent of the funding would come from the Federal Government’s Green and Inclusive Community Building Fund.
Work on the Complex would include:
- Replacement of the existing boiler plant with new natural gas-fired condensing boilers including new distribution pumps and accessories.
- Replacement of the existing air handling unit serving the multipurpose room.
- A facility-wide direct-digital control (DDC) system upgrade including a new web-based operator interface, electronic/electric control devices and actuators.
- Accessibility upgrades to the existing locker and washroom areas including the complete renewal of shower areas and the installation of new accessible washrooms and showers.
- Construction of a new, gender-neutral barrier-free washroom and special needs change room.
- Exterior wall repairs.
A release from the city also indicates there would be a reduction of greenhouse gases of approximately 276 (net) tonnes and $128,000 in utility savings.
“We are lessening our environmental footprint with the facility operations, while also making it more modern, inclusive, and inviting for patrons,” said Kelvin Jankowski, Construction Services Supervisor. “To minimize the impact, the closure will take place while other outdoor recreation options are available such as beaches, outdoor pools, splash pads, and trails.”
Spring swimming lessons and other activities will continue as planned without interruption. No new activities will be booked during the closure period. Stakeholder groups have also been notified in order to plan accordingly. All memberships will automatically be placed on hold during the closure period, and will be extended for the equivalent amount of time the facility is unavailable. If patrons wish to cancel their membership, they can receive a credit or request a refund.
