Raising awareness around human trafficking is crucial for northwestern Ontario.
An information session for parents and caregivers will happen on Wed. Feb. 22 at Kinsmen Northwood Centre.
This session will provide information to parents and caregivers about human trafficking: what it is, how traffickers operate, red flags and risk factors, and ways to talk about this issue with young people. Information about local resources that are available to support young people in our community will also be provided.
Kris Carlson is the Co-Chair of Thunder Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking in the city and notes that this can be an embarrassing topic for young people. She told Acadia News that often, young people are ashamed of the situation they’ve gotten themself in and feel that they can get themselves out. When in fact they will probably need outside assistance, and likely the police would need to be involved. Carlson went on to say that parents and caregivers might misidentify the child’s behaviour as moody, or just breaking rules.
Currently, Ontario makes up two-thirds of all human trafficking across Canada, while many don’t think that human trafficking is still happening.
This is a partnership initiative from the Thunder Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking and Community Safety & Well-Being Thunder Bay.
