It’s a first in Canada that hard drugs have been decriminalized, with the caveat being it only applies to small amounts of hard drugs like cocaine and heroin.
As of Jan. 31, 2023, adults will be legally allowed to have up to 2.5 grams of drugs on their person without consequence.
At 2.5 grams, this works out to be the equivalent of half a teaspoon or a small pill where if the individual is found to have fentanyl, morphine or meth on their person they won’t be arrested or have the items seized, instead, information will be offered to the individual for health and social services.
This pilot project is set to operate for three years, wrapping up in 2026.
