As part of its pledge to have net-zero emissions by 2050, the City of Thunder Bay is phasing out its propane-powered zamboni at the Fort William Gardens, in favour of an all electric model.
With zero emissions, the Ice Wolf Electric Ice Resurfacer is expected to save approximately four thousand dollars a year in maintenance and fuel costs from the switch.
The previous zamboni, according to a release from the City, released 7.78 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
“I’m thrilled and extremely proud of the City’s leadership for investing in initiatives that provide excellent service and achieve our common goal of net- zero emissions,” said Councillor Andrew Foulds, Earthcare Advisory Committee member. “This is just one step towards our goal, and clearly demonstrates the city’s commitment to achieving a better future for all.”
From a health perspective the vehicle will not emit any CO2 into the arena while operating, thus making the air cleaner for athletes, spectators and employees.
