Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is getting some new equipment to help cancer patients.
A third Linear Accelerator (LINAC) and a PET/CT scanner are being added to the hospital’s repertoire of equipment.
The LINAC will allow doctors to treat cancer patients with radiation to a specific area, leaving the surrounding tissue spared.
The addition of a new PET/CT scanner, it will allow a patient’s care team to see exactly where the suspected cancer is located using X-ray and nuclear imaging. The new one that’s on its way will be replacing an aging device as it is not able to be upgraded.
These new investments are valued at $13.2 million combined.
Both pieces of equipment are expected to be up and running by August and Dec 2023.
