An inquest into the deaths of two indigenous men in the custody of the Thunder Bay Police Service is set to take place next month.
Don Mamakwa, 44, and Roland McKay, 50, died on August 3rd 2014 and July 20th 2017 respectively, while in custody at the TBPS Headquarters on Balmoral Street. The inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two men, and the jury may make recommendations that could prevent future deaths in similar circumstances.
The inquest, which is set to begin at 9:30AM on Tuesday October 11th 2022, is expected to last 17 days and will hear from 31 witnesses.
