September 1st, 1980 was the last day that Terry Fox ran in his Marathon of Hope.
After starting his journey in Newfoundland and Labrador in April 1980, Terry had to stop just outside of Thunder Bay, ON along the Trans-Canada Highway. because the cancer has spread to his lungs. He had run a total of 5,373km across six provinces.
42 years later, Terry’s memory still lives on along with his dream that every Canadian give $1 to cancer research. Canada (and the world) has done much more than that, in fact more than $850M has been raised since 1980. That’s 22x the current population of Canada.
Even though people were still struggling in the midst of a pandemic, donations were still made worldwide during 2020-2021.
The Terry Fox Foundation was able to invest $11.6M into 11 types of cancer research projects. More than $2M that year went into research for blood cancer.
