Fort William First Nation Chief, Peter Collins is stepping aside.
The Chief announced his resignation through a Facebook Live video where he indicated that he’d be moving into a public sector job.
“An opportunity came along, and I applied for it. I was interviewed three times and was eventually selected to take on a new role…I’m not sure you’re all aware, but there is no pension in this seat. I leave with the shirt on my back that I came in here with.
Near the beginning of his video he thanked his wife and family as he’d traveled a lot during his time as Chief, calling it a very difficult decision to step down.
Collins was first elected as Chief in 1998, and has been in the position on and off for the last 24 years.
The effective date of his resignation is Sept. 18, 2022.
