Thunder Bay Police have been busy this summer.
Officers have executed a number of search warrants, arrests and investigations and current Acting Chief Dan Taddeo summarized the details in a recent meeting of the Police Services Board.
During the months of June and July:
- A total of 16 warrants were executed
- 30 persons were arrested (17 from outside of the district)
- 61 criminal charges were laid
- 9 home takeovers were investigated
- 2 firearms seized
- Approximately $41,000 in currency seized
- more than 7 kg of drugs collected (cocaine, crack cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine
This doesn’t include the recent arrests and drug busts by police where more illegal drugs have been pulled off the streets along with at least two guns and other weapons.
During his time speaking with the board, Taddeo outlined that the Service has been doing this on a budget doled out for a smaller population base…
As indicated in the current strategic plan of the Thunder Bay Police Services Board, the true population of Thunder Bay could be as high as 150,000. This could explain part of the challenges being faced by this police service when dealing with a disproportionate number of crimes and social issues based on a 100,000 per capita measurement
He also detailed that Thunder Bay’s officer have a higher case clearing average than the provincial and federal stats.
I am proud to state that the clearance rate of the Thunder Bay Police Service is significantly higher than both the provincial and national averages of other police services with the overall weighted clearance rate being 54.2 with the provincial average being 39.52 and national average being 35.78. Again, this speaks to the skills, expertise, and dedication of all sworn and civilian members of our police service.
With the amount of work that officers are doing, Taddeo said that the Service is also aware of it’s members mental health and are working towards creating more mental health supports on top of what is already in place.
