A first for Thunder Bay as the latest variant, Omicron, has been confirmed in the area.
The health unit confirmed that four people have tested positive and it is likely that another four will also test the same.
The individuals involved are all apart of the same household. It’s also known that they have had a direct link to southern Africa.
A written statement from the Thunder Bay’s local Medical Officer of Health;
Quick action on the part of these individuals led to very early notification of an individual with COVID-19 where omicron was a possibility due to the travel connection. Initial screening results were consistent with the delta variant, however, the confirmatory result received this weekend indicated omicron,” Said Dr. Janet DeMille, Medical Officer of Health.
DeMille also states that because of early detection, they is no evidence that the highly contagious variant has spread out of the family home.
