A first-time candidate in the federal election felt the need to put his name forward instead of sitting on the sidelines.
Rick Daines is running for the People’s Party of Canada in Thunder Bay-Superior North and claims in the last eighteen months the Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms has been cast aside during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Canada is a country that people have admired around the world, certainly for my whole life, and probably since Canada became a country,” Daines told Acadia News. “That’s because there’s a constitution and a charter of rights that’s valued. Unfortunately the charter (and what’s in it) has been thrown out of the window.”

Daines is a grocery store and rental property owner in Geraldton, and is a former police officer with both the Ontario Provincial Police and Peel Regional Police.
Daines never aspired for a life in politics, but felt the need to run based on what he feels is not the whole story getting out about COVID-19.
“We were told two weeks to flatten the curve of the virus, and then it was mandatory mask wearing, and then lockdown after lockdown where businesses are going out of business forever. It doesn’t seem like there’s an end in sight for the pandemic,” added Daines.
With less than 36 days to go until election day, Daines sees a few challenges, “Getting the message out, gather up the funds that we need and get the word out to such a vast geographical area in such a short time.”
Election Day is Monday, September 20.
