This week we dug some of my and my sister’s old stuffies (or stuffed animals as we used to call them back in the day whether they were animals or not) out of storage at my parents house. Man, it’s like a who’s who of the Eighties!
We’ve got one of my all-time faves, Scooby-Doo, with his pesky nephew Scrappy-Doo, a Smurf, Snoopy (R.I.P. Snoopy’s nose), E.T., a Wrinkles, and the hottest toy, potentially of all-time, Cabbage Patch Kids. Note the difference in condition between mine and my sister’s. Missy is pristine and wearing a bright and clean sweater our Grandma Kay made for her. Meanwhile Joey Fred looks like he’s been through a war. Red and yellow marks all over his face, a busted up leg. The same Grandma Kay performed several surgeries on Joey back in the day. Well there’s a reason he looks like that. He had hundreds of battles over the year with my giant Hulk Hogan figure like the one below.
Obviously the Hulkster got the better of Joey time-and-again! I really appreciate my parents holding onto this stuff for so long. First, because I love it, but more importantly, because now my young son has a bunch of new friends. He’s taken a certain shine to E.T. which is awesome, because I got that as a result of my Letter to Santa which was in the paper way back when!
This isn’t the first time Junior has benefitted from me not being able to get rid or anything, and my parents generously (begrudgingly?) holding onto my childhood treasures! A couple of years ago I gave him my He-Man and the Masters of the Universe figures. I LOVED those toys/the cartoon. Did I say give? I meant to say lend. He was so pumped, and so was I until he broke off Spikor’s leg right away. I tried to disguise that fact by tucking him off to the side in this photo.
It’s been a real blast from the past seeing these toys after all these years. I’ve still got a few tricks up my sleeve. One of these days he might get my WWF wrestlers. Once I’m done playing with them. So … maybe never?
What are some classic items you’ve held on to, or wish you had?
