The woman behind the production of fighter planes during WWII is being featured in a Heritage Minute.
Elsie MacGill headed up the operation at the Canadian Car & Foundry (Can Car) factory in what is now Thunder Bay back in 1938.
“Elsie MacGill regarded challenges that others considered insurmountable to be nothing more than new obstacles to overcome,” says Anthony Wilson-Smith, President and CEO of Historica Canada. “This new Heritage Minute pays tribute to someone who spent much of her life in the service of our country – and in the ways she did so, made an impact that continues to resonate today.”
The 33 year old MacGill oversaw the production of over 1400 Hawker Hurricane aircrafts, one of the main fighters flown by Canadian and Allied airmen in the Battle of Britain, earning her the nickname “Queen of the Hurricanes.”
