A spike in COVID-19 cases brings a reminder from Thunder Bay’s health unit not to relax with precautions.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Janet DeMille points out not only is the rise happening in Ontario, but she’s also concerned as she looks outside the province. “More recently we’ve seen some numbers increasing in Manitoba, for example. If people are travelling there, they should be taking all the necessary precautions.”
DeMille adds with Thunder Bay having a low number of cases, it’s easy to give into temptation to ease on safety measures, such as visiting a party where there could be someone who does have the virus.
“People regret, they realize they didn’t do everything they should’ve at the time. Don’t do anything where you put yourself in that position of regret,” says DeMille.
She’s also wary, as people travel more, of that second wave expected in the fall. “Typically like flu, for example, always spreads more in the fall and the winter. But other types of coronavirus also spread in the fall or winter. So we know we’re getting to a time when the virus is essentially going to get stronger.”
The medical officer adds to keep up the physical distancing, hand washing and mask wearing.
