The Government of Canada has formally named Chanie Wenjack a person of national historic significance.
Wenjack was from Ogoki Post on the Marten Falls First Nation and attended the Ceclia Jaffray residential school near Kenora.
He ran away from the school and died in October of 1966 and has inspired artists to share his story.
Parks Canada, which announced the designations, says Chanie Wenjack’s life and death has helped educate Canadians about the history and legacies of residential schools.
He was one of 10 people, places or events to be given the designation.
