A Thunder Bay local playing in the NHL is about to get a taste of home.
Mackenzie Blackwood has been traded from the San Jose Sharks to the Colorado Avalanche.
Blackwood, Givani Smith, and a fifth-round pick in 2027 were traded for Alexandar Georgiev, Nikolai Kovalenko, a fifth-round draft pick in 2025, and a second-round draft pick in 2026.
Blackwood is 6-9-3 with a three-goal-against average, a .911 save percentage, and one shutout in 19 games, including 17 starts this season.
He was drafted 42nd overall in the 2015 NHL draft after stops in the OHL, GOJHL, and the Lakehead Junior Hockey League.
Professionally, he has played for the New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks.
