Day 9 of the Paris Olympics sees Canadians adding to the country’s medal count.
Kennetcook, N.S.’s own Wyatt Sanford faced off against Frances Sofiane Oumiha in the 63.5-kilogram men’s boxing category, ultimately losing by a 4-1 decision. Oumiha secures a spot in the finals for a chance at gold, while Sanford takes home the bronze.
Making history, he ended Canada’s 28-year Olympic boxing medal drought by becoming the first Canadian boxer to win a medal. The last time a Canadian boxer achieved this was in 1996 when David Defiagbon secured silver at the Summer Games in Atlanta.

Canada’s medal count is now at 17 – eight bronze, four silver, and five gold.
Earlier this morning, Corey Conners and Nick Taylor started round 4 of Le Golf National. Conners climbed up to 11th, while Taylor also advanced and is now in 30th place.
The women’s basketball team suffered a 79-70 defeat against Nigeria, ending their chance to advance to the quarterfinals.
Round one of the women’s 3000M steeplechase saw Regan Ree place 12th in her heat, while Ceili McCabe finished 7th.
Later in the day, cyclist Alison Jackson placed 19th and Olivia Baril finished 44th in the women’s road race.
Camryn Rogers topped Group A with a 74.69-metre throw, securing her spot in Tuesday night’s Olympic women’s hammer throw final.
The male 4 x 100 medley relay swimming team placed 5th, and the women team finished 4th.
