Thunder Bay councillors voted in favour of a zoning change at the Intercity Shopping Centre to potentially make room a new central library location.
The vote at Monday night’s meeting means the project can proceed if council decides in July to build the library in that location.
Fifty-five letters in support of the project were given to the Thunder Bay Public Library, only two of those expressing concerns.
Administration spoke with those who have concerns before the meeting.
This location would have benefits for a central branch, with major roads nearby and lots of parking.
The move could mean a loss of revenue for the city of about $220,000 if it’s approved.
Administration confirmed the zoning amendment would remain if plans for the library do not move forward, but council could withdraw the approval to reverse Monday night’s decision.
Council will not need to ratify this decision at a future meeting.
