A Thunder Bay man who helped bring clean water to developing countries has received an award from the Governor General.
The Meritorious Service Cross is being awarded to James Gehrels who co-founded Lifewater Canada.
In addition to clean water and sanitation the organization helped in advancing girls’ education by ending their task of fetching water, in sub-Saharan Africa and Haiti.
As a result, the training in hygiene and equipment maintenance has brought sustainable change which has interrupted the cycle of sickness and poverty for millions of people.
The honour is for “individuals who have performed a deed or an activity in a highly professional manner, or at a very high standard that brings benefit or honour to Canada” for which Gehrels, and co-founder Glenn Stonks qualified for.
According to Lifewater Canada‘s website Gehrels passed away in 2020 following a heart attack.
