The physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being of Elders in Aroland First Nation will be supported with the construction of a new Elders Lodge.
A total of $20.5 million in federal dollars is being devoted to the project through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program.
“This building provides a way for Elders to continue living in Aroland instead of having to leave our community for assisted living.” said Chief Sonny Gagnon in a release.
He notes this will allow Elders who had to leave the community for housing, assistance or medical needs to return home.
It will be a net-zero carbon building built to withstand the climate, and will feature 20 private suites for both singles and couples, along with communal areas for dining, cultural and social activities.
Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu says this will ensure Elders can age surrounded by family and friends while maintaining the connections to the community.
“With this federal investment, Elders can continue their vital role of transferring their knowledge, language and traditions, to younger generations, while receiving the essential care they need.”
No timeline for when shovels will be in the ground was provided.
