A vehicle theft in Thunder Bay prompted the Ontario Provincial Police to deploy several resources near Nipigon.
The incident tipped off early Friday morning around 2 a.m. when a report of a stolen vehicle was made from an Arthur Street business, with the driver fleeing east on Highway 11-17.
Officers later located the vehicle near Highway 628 near Red Rock, and attempted a traffic stop.
However, the driver continued to flee, requiring officers to deploy a spike strip, which successfully brought the vehicle to a stop, where the driver then fled on foot.
Members of both the OPP’s Emergency Response Team and the K9 unit were called in to assist which lead to the apprehension of the accused, a 19-year-old man from Geraldton.
Police say no injuries resulted from the incident and the accused was taken back to the Nipigon detachment for further testing and later charged with:
- Dangerous Operation
- Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs
- Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)
- Flight from Peace Officer
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
- Drive Motor Vehicle – No Licence
Additionally, he faces a 90-Day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension, and following a bail court appearance has since been remanded into custody.
Meanwhile, the vehicle was returned to its owner.
