A shooting at a rally to celebrate the Superbowl win for the Kansas City Chiefs has killed one person, and sent 21 others, including at least eight children to hospital.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon Kansas City Police confirmed three people have been taken into custody and that firearms had been recovered.
Police have not announced a possible motive for the shooting, noting the investigation is still in its early stages.
The victim who died has been identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a DJ for a local radio station KKFI, with the station announcing her death on social media Wednesday evening.
“It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally.”
At the same press conference Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas spoke to reporters who called the shooting a tragedy for everyone.
“I had the chance to talk to my wife a moment ago who said we became part of a statistic of too many Americans. Those who have experienced, or been part of, or connected to a mass shooting. That is something I hope we all recognize is highly problematic for all of us.”
This incident marks the latest in a number of firearm incidents at sports celebrations in recent years including shootings near the victory parade for the Texas Rangers after the World Series and the Denver Nuggets celebration of their first ever NBA championship win in 2023, as well as a shooting near Toronto city hall during the 2019 parade and rally for the Toronto Raptors who won their first ever NBA championship.
