Officials with Kenora Pride say they were left a little surprised when three of the region’s other pride organizations announced they would be pausing their relationship with Kenora.
Chair Andrea Campbell says how everything has played out has been embarrassing and could have negative implications.
Additionally, she believes the decision made by the other organization was an attack against her but hopes the four organizations will be able to reconcile despite the sudden change to the relationship.
“I don’t think it reflects well to queer youth who are maybe looking to get involved and so we will always keep dialogue open.”
Campbell adds some of the stressors of the relationship is tied to Conservative MP Eric Melillo, who has remained relatively silent on discussions involving anti-trans rhetoric which has been put in the spotlight by some members of his party and has not met with area pride organizations despite repeated requests.
She emphasizes her organization is a human rights organization and stands by its principles.
“We vehemently believe that medical decisions should remain in the hands of patients and their doctors, and no one else. The two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans, intersex communities and allies deserve to have their human rights respected as well as children deserve safe homes and safe schools.”
