Building upon an incredibly successful 2023 organizers of Northwestern Ontario’s premier pop culture and fandom event, Thundercon, say they will be returning once again.
“We are so very excited to be heading into our 9th year,” says Media Director, Heather Dickson. “We’re gradually growing our footprint in the community and are genuinely grateful for the community support we’ve received over the years….And this year, we’re going to change things up a bit in terms of guests and other programming.”
Dickson notes the Not-for-Profit organization, run by volunteers, continues to learn what works and how to improve the event, which was held in September at the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition and saw more than 2,500 people attend, setting a new record.
This year’s event will once again take place at the CLE this time on September 21st and 22nd.
2023 guests included comics legend Larry Hama, film and television actor Alex Zahara, and visual effects artist C. Andrew Nelson.
However, many came out to experience ultimate 80’s and 90’s Canadian nostalgia with Degrassi duo of Pat Mastroianni and Stacie Mistysyn.
As for this year, Dickson hasn’t let any secrets out, but did provide a few hints.
“We’re taking a cue from Pat and Stacie,” says Dickson. “So we have another pair of guests coming that we know will delight attendees of all ages, as well as an actor from 2 movies that are absolutely iconic!”
Additionally, a new board has been elected to lead the organization with new faces to bring different experiences and focus to the event.
Incoming Chair Amanda Capar says last year’s success has brought new energy to the group.
“We are already working on plans to make 2024 even better.“
