Another member of the Trudeau Liberals has announced he will be moving on from politics and joining the private sector.
David Lametti, who has represented the Montreal area riding of LaSalle-Émard-Verdun since its creation eight years ago, says he will be resigning his post as MP, effective January 31st.
During his time in office he served several cabinet roles, including as Canada’s attorney general from 2019 until 2023 before being shuffled out last summer, which he says took a personal toll.
By holding the role for four and a half years it makes him one of the longest serving Liberal justice ministers in recent decades.
A total of 13 justice bills were introduced in that position, which included reforms to family law, the elimination of mandatory minimum penalties, sexual assault training for judges and the ban on conversion therapy.
In his resignation letter Lametti says he will also be retiring as a law professor at McGill University and would be joining the law firm Fasken Martineau DuMoulin S.E.N.C.R.L, s.r.l. with a focus on technological and Indigenous Law.
A post to social media from the firm has confirmed the move.
Honored to welcome Mr. David Lametti, former Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada to Fasken as Counsel. A dedicated advocate for Indigenous reconciliation, he's also deeply engaged in emerging technology, particularly artificial intelligence. https://t.co/S7PgK2UI17 pic.twitter.com/DUiuC6WthT
