Thunder Bay mayor Ken Boshcoff has offered his condolences on the death of woman last month.
On December 30th, 21 year old Jenna Ostberg, was found deceased in a home on Ray Boulevard, following a 911 call for a domestic disturbance and a second call to ‘cancel’ the first.
Ontario’s Special Investigation’s Unit says neither of the calls received a police response, and has started an investigation.
In a release issued Tuesday Boshcoff says:
We offer our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the loved ones and those impacted by this tragic death. The Thunder Bay Police Service is co-operating with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) as it conducts an investigation. As a result of the SIU’s involvement, the City cannot provide any further comment.
The statement concluded by adding “Once the investigation is over, Chief Darcy Fleury will provide a media brief and address the matter publicly.”
It follows statements released by both the Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the Thunder Bay Police Association last week.
In its release the Nishnawbe Aski Nation requested privacy for the family of the deceased, and stated the family is awaiting the results of both the Coroner’s report and the SIU investigation before making any further comments or decisions, but also issued some concerns.
“The family’s fear however, is their daughter is the latest victim of inadequate and unjust policing services received by First Nation women in particular in Thunder Bay.”
Meanwhile, the Thunder Bay Police Association, offered its condolences in a statement.
Additionally the organization says from what it understands details, which provide some clarity, are being withheld.
It is calling upon the Director of the SIU, Joseph Martino, to provide further details aimed at securing public confidence.
“Thunder Bay police members take every call for assistance and their duty to protect our community with the utmost diligence and seriousness. We will continue to wok to build trust with community members while serving our community with diligence, pride, and respect.”
