In reflection of the last seven months since he was sworn in Thunder Bay Police Chief Darcy Fleury feels he has been able to accomplish a lot prior to the end of 2023.
He notes getting restructuring of the service has had a positive impact on service delivery, which has allowed them to focus on enforcement, where he says some of the numbers are showing a downward trend.
“We have seen some reductions in some of the more serious crime, just I don’t think its based on anybody coming here or anything like that, it just seems to be the nature of what is going on right now. We have had a bit of a reduction in that area, some of the stats, I think our homicide rates are down a little bit.”
2022 saw the city set a double digit record of 15 homicides, this year the city has seen less than half that number.
Fleury adds a big focus is the continued issue of the drug trade in the city, which includes those coming from beyond Thunder Bay’s borders to sell or deliver illicit substances.
Another achievement brought in during Fleury’s first few months, which he is proud to have done, is the finalization and signing an agreement with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service in June.
