Major cuts at Canada’s public broadcaster as it looks to address a $125-million budget shortfall.
CBC/Radio-Canada plans to cut 600 union and non-union positions over the next year.
It will also eliminate about 200 positions that are currently vacant across the corporation.
“CBC/Radio-Canada is not immune to the upheaval facing the Canadian media industry,” president and CEO Catherine Tait said in a news release.
“We’ve successfully managed serious structural declines in our business for many years, but we no longer have the flexibility to do so without reductions.”
In addition to the job cuts, English and French programming budgets will also be reduced in the next fiscal year.
The corporation said this will mean reduced renewals and acquisitions, fewer new television series and episodes of existing shows, as well as fewer digital original series.
“We understand how concerning this is to the people affected and to the Canadians who depend on our programs and services,” said Tait.
“We will have more details in the months ahead, but we are doing everything we can to minimize the impact of these measures.”
