‘Cheers’ and ‘Veronica’s Closet’ actress Kirstie Alley has passed away at the age of 71 following a brief battle with cancer.
The announcement came through a post on her Instagram by her children, True and Lillie Parker.
“We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered,” the statement read.
“She was surrounded by here closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead. As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”
“Our mother’s zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did.” the statement said.
Alley made her film debut in 1982’s Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan, where she played the Vulcan Starfleet officer Lieutenant Saavik, however she didn’t return to the role in the subsequent sequels.
In 1987 she hit a big break joining the cast of Cheers until its 11th and final season. During that time, she also starred in 1989’s Look Who’s Talking. That movie went on to gross almost $300 million world wide and produced two sequels, which she also starred in.
Her co-star from those films, John Travolta, wrote on his Instagram following the announcement of Alley’s passing.
“Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had. I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again.”
Most recently, Alley had competed in season seven of The Masked Singer as “Baby Mammoth” on Team Cuddly.
