Nishnawbe Aski Nation Deputy Grand Chief Bobby Narcisse calls the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal Rejection of a Compensation Final Settlement Agreement, something of a set back.
“A bit disappointing, because its going to delay the much needed compensation that is owed to our children, to many of our children that were in care across Nishnawbe Aski Nation.”
A 40 billion dollar settlement package with 20 billion set aside for compensation, was announced by the Federal Government in January. In June an agreement was made between the government, the Assembly of First Nations and plaintiffs in class actions brought against Canada for its discrimination against first Nations children through the on reserve child welfare system.
The Nishnawbe Aski Nation holds intervenor status at the CHRT, and has been involved in aggressive negotiations with all parties involved.
However this week the Tribunal said the minimum cash amount could not be guaranteed, thus leaving some individuals with less than what they are entitled too.
“We acknowledge that there is frustration and opposition to this decision from the Tribunal, but it is important to remember that this decision does not mean that the $40 billion settlement package announced in January, including the $20 billion for compensation, is off the table.”
Narcisse believes it is very important that the discussions continue adding this means they must go back to the table to ensure the compensation package is rolled out in a responsible way.
