The Pride flag will be flying at local schools in Thunder Bay.
In a statement from three local school boards, Lakehead Public Schools, Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales and Thunder Bay Catholic, will be flying the flag to “proudly acknowledge and embrace the differences and similarities, which make all of us unique”. The flags will rise on June 1st at locations across the city; Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales and at Lakehead Public School.
The Pride flag dates back to at least 1978 when it was first created and represented by Gilbert Baker who was an openly gay man and drag queen according to Britannica.
The flag represents those that are part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) communities, and has since grown to include those that identify as intersex, asexual and/or two-spirit.
The flag was also updated to include those identities.
