It was a sad sight to see a historic tug boat take on this much water.
Over the weekend the James Whalen tug boat appeared to have taken on too much water and started sinking at the Kaministiquia River Heritage Park where it was docked.
Last year, the boat took on water but a submersible pump that was installed in the hull was able to pump lots of water out thus raising the boat.
In a phone call with Cory Halvorsen, Manager – Parks and Open Spaces with the city, said that “the pump didn’t have to turn on that much this year, but it wasn’t like it was constantly running into keep the water levels down going into winter…” The quick thaw and significant rain fall is being attributed to how the 117 year old boat came to taking on so much water this year.
The city will be working this week on how much it would cost to get the boat out of the water, there’s no estimate available yet.
The other focus this week is a tug company communicated with the city that they would be able to get it out, but a major issue is where the tug is going to go. It was in talks to possibly go to the marina this summer, however those plans were not finalized.
