The potential new police headquarters is on the agenda for the At Large virtual meeting.
The five councillors will gather online starting at 7:00 p.m. Thursday to address the budget item, which is now a $56 million ask from the Police Services Board to replace the Balmoral facility.
Councillor Rebecca Johnson agrees with police needing a sufficient building to work in, but feels like some details are missing.
“I don’t believe that we have really received enough information as to the other options,” Johnson noted. “We have all the information regarding a new facility, that’s fine, but what are some of the other things that we can look at. It’s hard to make a final decision when you only have part of the information.”
Johnson added that she doesn’t want to see the city going into debt, because the interest of borrowing more money could cause significant challenges to revenues for the city.
The Police Services Board agreed in April to ask council for approval to build the facility.
The 2022 Operating and Capital Budget also had a late addition from the board for fencing around the current facility on Balmoral Street.
