As we see the COVID-19 situation evolve with the omicron variant, there is still no word how or if this will effect students after they return from their winter breaks.
In a letter obtained by Acadia News, Director of Education with the Lakehead Public Schools Ian MacRae has said the guidance from health and education authorities is to plan for in-person learning in January. The final day of school for students is Dec. 17, with them set to return Jan. 3.
“We recognize that families will need time to make arrangements if there is a pivot to virtual learning, and we are committed to communicating that information to you as soon as it is made available to us,” stated MacRae. “You can expect details about schedules and timelines, access to technology, as well as resources to help support families with the transition.”
The letter to parents also provided some recommendations as to how to safely celebrate the holidays this year:
- spend time with your children and enjoy the break from school;
- follow the guidance from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, including guidance on gatherings, travel, shopping, etc.; and
- monitor Board communication channels for news and information, including Messenger, Twitter, Facebook and school communication applications.
Last year, the province decided to move to virtual learning after the winter break started.
While Ontario’s numbers are continuing to rise, The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has seen a considerable drop in their active case count this week.
It is unsure whether closures will be regionally based, or effect every school board in Ontario.
