The demolition of the 200-metre smokestack at the former OPG Thunder Bay Generating Station was a success, according to the southern Ontario firm handling the work.
Budget Demolition brought the smokestack at the defunct biomass plant down this week.
Site manager Jeremy Later explains they worked with two engineering firms to make sure it all went smoothly.
“One engineering firm just engineered how much we could take out and how stable the stack would be, and the other engineering firm would model the demolition of it,” he explains. “And it went exactly to plan, we can’t even be happier [with] how it went.”
However, Later says they always plan for the worst, so they ask you to stay away from any demolition sites for your own safety.
Next, Budget Demolition will move on to the main building, starting with the precipitator area in December, followed by the other half of the building next summer.
The exact dates for those demolitions have not been confirmed, since Later says things like weather can delay the process. They will make an announcement on social media closer to the estimated dates.
