The most recent forest fire update was promising, though experts are warning against getting too optimistic just yet.
No new fires means the active count now sits at 82, with 10 of those considered not under control.
There were three fires added in Ontario, all in the Northeast region.
Fire Information Officer Jonathan Scott explains that weather patterns have assisted in calming some of the more severe fires.
“With recent rain, most of our larger fires having been exhibiting lower fire behaviours,” explains Scott. “The forest fire hazard is actually mainly low to moderate in the region, but there are areas of high hazard in the districts of Thunder Bay, Fort Francis, and Nipigon.”
Scott concludes by saying we could see more fires ease this week, though there are various factors to consider.
“Over the next few days we may get some more rain as well, it just depends where it falls and how much we get.” says Scott. “Also with that, the far north for instance has received more rain than the south, so that’s something to consider.”
The largest fire of note in the region remains to be Kenora-51, which is currently burning at 200,667 hectares and is not under control.
