The Port of Thunder Bay saw a new record for its biggest cargo load of grain.
Port officials say Algoma Central Corporation’s new vessel the Captain Henry Jackman loaded up 31,100 metric tonnes of grain destined for West Africa.
That was the Captain Henry Jackman’s maiden voyage.
Despite that record-breaking Grain shipments at the port have dropped back down to average levels after peaking last year.
Grain shipments for this year are just under 3.5-million metric tonnes.
That’s four per cent higher than average, but nine per cent lower than last year’s volumes.
However, Keefer Terminal is expecting cargo volumes to reach a 25-year high this year, mostly thanks to steel products headed to Western Canada.
