Both professional and amateur players can get involved as the city hosts the Northern Ontario Disc Golf Championship.
Close to 200 competitors will fight for titles in various divisions for men and women Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1.
Rounds are scheduled at three different courses in Thunder Bay, including Dragon Hills Golf Course, Birch Point Disc Golf Course at Boulevard Lake and the Bayview Disc Golf Course out at Pass Lake.
“We’re thrilled, we’ve been here since last Saturday working on course infrastructure,” says Chris Ozolin, the Director of the Ontario Disc Sports Organization. “We’re done with that know, we’re kind of enjoying the fruits of our labours. We’ve been here five years in a row and this is kind of the pinnacle of what we’ve done and we’re really excited about it.”
Ozolin adds there’s been a steady growth and following for disc golf, especially over the pandemic.
“Prior to the pandemic hitting, there were about 60,000 Ontarians playing, once the pandemic hit we rocketed to 125,000 Ontarians playing now,” notes Ozolin. “We usually incur about 20 per cent growth per year, now we’re looking at 60 per cent growth per year which is really fantastic for this sport and this event in particular.”
The Director went on to say that Thunder Bay is currently being considered to host national disc golf events.
Dragon Hills Golf Course in particular is praised within the community.
